Sonakshi to inaugurate DU's film fest

Despite DU's alumni forming a major part of the Bollywood population, a lot of times, its famous ex-students have faced hurdles when they come back to their alma mater.

Years ago, Prakash Jha, alumnus, Ramjas College, could walk leisurely on the roads of North Campus. Sadly, when he turned a filmmaker, and wished to walk down the same roads, along with the cast of "Raajneeti", he couldn't. "I have heard many celebs have faced such problems when they wish to come to DU. Which is why, we have begun DUSU's Film Society," informs Basant Jha, ex-presidential advisor, DUSU. Akshay Kumar, joint secretary, DUSU, adds, "Just a week ago, we presented a letter to the vice chancellor, and he has approved the society."

Jha added, "We will honour all the famous alumni of DU, who are now in the film fraternity. The first ceremony of our society will be a Film Festival, where we will honour one particular Bollywood celeb each time, along with screening films, etc."

The first one will be named after Shotgun Sinha. While his daughter Sonakshi, who is also invited, will inaugurate the film festival, Shatrughan will light the lamp to announce the opening of the Film Society. Jha, who recently helped Imtiaz Ali get 400 DU students (out of which 150 were from Hindu) for the shoot of "Rockstar" in Connaught Place's Central Park, adds, "While discussing this ceremony, we thought of him. We will compile scenes from all his popular films and show it to the audience. We have also spoken to him on the phone, and he has agreed to come."

While the festival, tentatively named Shatrughan Sinha Film Festival, will take place towards the end of this month, around December 22, they are also "planning a lot of other activities under the Film Society, like choreography, scriptwriting, film-related skills, so that students can polish their skills here," concludes Jha, who also heads an anti-smoking campaign in Delhi – Smoke Minus India.
